A compact, dense shrub that is highly resistant to the cold, with small, lanceolate, dark olive-green evergreen foliage. Easy to grow and free of pests, it is a good alternative to boxwood, which can be pruned and forms easily into a ball when it is not pruned. Otherwise, it naturally takes on a more upright shape. Decorative orange-red shoots. White-green flowers in spring. It thrives in cool to damp, non-calcareous soil, even with poor drainage.
