On shoots especially, leaves are a very intense and attractive red colour, becoming red all over in autumn. The pale yellow, slightly orange, flowers appear in June, followed by decorative red berries. Forming a vigorous and erect shrub, it has spreading branches in age. Tolerates relatively well, drought and shade from trees, but will be more colourful in the sun.
