Red coloured shoots turning purple in spring and dark green to purple in summer. In February-March, it bears red-brown male catkins flowers drooping of 6 cm long. Its round and oval leaves of 8 to 10 cm diameter are highly veined and finely serrated. In September-October, it bears red-brown edible fruits of 1 to 2 cm diameter. The fruits are covered with a dark red tubular casing (involucre). Vigorous and hardy shrub that is easy to grow. Spreads thanks to suckers. Melliferous plant.
