Remarkable round and palmed leaves of 8-12cm, cut out to a half with 7-11 oval lobes. Gold coloured from spring to autumn, sometimes edged in red or brown. Small compact and relatively dense, sometimes growing to over 3m with age. Red-purple flowers appear, in little erect bunches, before the leaves, followed by winged fruit. Prefers a non-chalky soil, rich, cool and well drained. Well known in Japan for more than 2 centuries. Melliferous.
