Beautiful and vigorous, large conical tree, branches starting from the base that thin out with age, and a rounded peak. Sprawling branches at the base, more erect near the top. Resists dry or cold weather, pollution and chalky soils. Flowers, appearing in May, are yellow (male) and red (female). Rough, dark brown bark. Dense, dark green and thick foliage, 8-12cm long. Cones are 5-7cm long, opening up to light brown after maturing for 2 years.
